This member of the Xanthorrhoeaceae family was described by Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Muell in 1864. It is found in the southern part of Australia, growing in sandy or other well drained soil with little to some water and lots of sun. The stem will (in 100 years or more) grow up to one meter in height and 25 centimetres in diameter, the leaves to 60 centimetres long. The flowers are crème colour, and seeds seems to be the only way of reproducing.

The genera name from the Greek xanthos; 'yellow' and rheo; 'to flow', referring to the yellow gum that can be extracted. The species name means 'with four angles'.
