It is found in Angola, Botswana, Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia Zaire and Zimbabwe, growing in a sandy or other well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from ten to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are pale blue.

The genera name after Horace Waller, a 19th century missionary in central Africa. The species name after Bishop Mackenzie, who was stationed at a mission in Malawi. Grown as a crop in Malawi, photo by Nicholas Wightman, Zambiaflora.com.
