This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle. It is found in Karoo and Namaqualand in South Africa and perhaps Namibia. It is growing in sand or well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb will grow up to six centimetres in diameter, the leaves will get 40 centimetres long. The flowers are pale pink to dark red. The genera is named after the German patron of botany, August Ferdinand Graf von Veltheim. The species name after the Cape of Africa. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
