VELTHEIMIA BRACTEATA

This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by William Henry Harvey in 1870. It is found on the Eastern Cape in South Africa, growing in rich or well drained soil with some water and little to some sun. The bulb will grow up to seven centimetres in diameter, the leaves will get 45 centimetres long. The flowers are pale yellow to dark pink. The genera is named after the German patron of botany, August Ferdinand Graf von Veltheim. The species name means 'having bracts' - modified leaves directly beneath the flower. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae.
