This member of the Hyacinthaceae family was given this name by Adolphe Steinheil in 1834. It is found in northern Africa, Israel, Spain and Italy, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulbs can grow to five centimetres, the undulated leaves up to 15 centimetres. The flowers are cream, purple and brownish.

This plant produces it leaves in the real early spring while the flowers appears during the dry, late summer.

The genera name after Johannes Heinrich Ursinus, 1608-1667, a German author, scholar, Lutheran theologian, humanist and dean of Regensburg. The species name referring to the edge of the leaves. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Hyacinthaceae is now part of the Asparagaceae. I found only one plant on Sardinia in September, dug up by wild boars.
