This member of the Liliaceae* family was given this name by Pierre Edmond Boissier in 1859. It is found in northern Turkey, Iran and Transcaucasus, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulbs grow to one and a half to two and a half centimetre in diameter. The leaves up to 25 centimetres and the inflorescence up to 40 centimetres. The flowers are all from crimson, scarlet over pal red to pinkish and yellow with a dark centre.
The genera name from an ancient word for turban. The species name indicates it originate from Armenia.
