TULBAGHIA GALPINII

This little member of the Alliaceae family was given this name by Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter in 1897. It is found in the Western Cape in South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The rhizome can grow to one and a half centimetre in diameter, the entire plant to twelve centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish white to light pinkish.

The genera is named after Ryk Tulbagh, governor of the Cape of Good Hope. The species is named after Ernest Edward Galpin, 20th century South African banker, amateur botanist and plant collector. ') Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Alliaceae is now part of the Amaryllidaceae.
