This member of the Aizoaceae family was given this name by Martin Heinrich Gustav Schwantes in 1926. It's from southern South Africa, growing in well-drained soil with some water and sun. The caudex grows to 30 centimetres, the stems to 60 centimetres high. The flowers are white to pink, and besides seeds, it can be also reproduced by cuttings. The genera name from the Greek thirix; 'hair' and diadema; 'band around the head', referring to the crown of bristles on the leaf tips. The species name for the bulbous roots. Seen as a Facioidaceae in IPNI, and also as a Mesembryanthemaceae. Pink=Specks, ES 0377, (Tanzania, Iringa Prov.). A bigger one.
