This member of the Melanthiaceae family was given this name by Per Axel Rydberg in 1903. It is found in California, south-western Oregon in U.S.A. and northern Baja California in Mexico. It is growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 centimetres in height. The flowers are white and pale yellow..
