This member of the Menispermaceae family was given this name by Inez Verdoorn and Georges M.D.J. Troupin in 1962. It is found in Angola, Botswana, north-western South Africa, northern Namibia and Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The vines will grow up to ten meters. The tiny flowers are greenish to crème coloured. The genera from Latin tīna; 'wine-vessel' and Greek σπορά, sporá; 'sowing ' for the fruits. The species name means 'craggy, rough, uneven'. When detachment from the soil by animal disturbances, it grows a survival root reaching up to ten meters down from the trees.
