This member of the Bromeliaceae family was described by Carl Christian Mez in 1901. It is found in southern Mexico and central America, growing as an epiphyte. It thrives with some water and lots of sun. The pseudobulbs can grow to six centimetres in diameter and 25 centimetres long. The flowers are pink and purple. The genera is named after Elias Tillands, 1640–1693, a Swedish botanist, working in Finland. The species is named after Eduard Georg Seler, 1849-1922, a prominent German anthropologist, ethnohistorian, linguist, epigrapher, academic and Americanist scholar.
