This member of the Lamiaceae family was given this name by Leslie Edward Wastell Codd in 1983. It is found in southern Africa, growing along rivers in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The slightly swollen stem can grow to ten centimetres in diameter, the dense bush can grow to two or even five metres in height. The flowers are from white over pink to pale violet.

The genera name means 'four glands', and the species name; 'growing along rivers'.
