This member of the Talinaceae family was given this name by Joseph Gaertner in 1791. It is found in the central part of the Americas, growing in well-drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The stem will reach for one meter, the flowers are pink to yellowish.
The genera name is derived from the Senegalese name for a certain species in Senegal. The species name means 'panicles', referring to the flower clusters.
