It is found in Botswana, Burundi, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is growing in a well drained sandy or gritty soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to nine centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 40 centimetres in height. The flowers are golden yellow. The species is named after David Arnot, 1821-1894, a South African Griqua agent, diamond prospector, diplomat, plant collector and correspondent with Hooker, based in the Cape Colony.
