This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Deidré Anne Snijman in 1994. It is found in the mid-western South Africa, growing in a well drained but rather rich soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The bulb can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to fifteen centimetres in height. The flowers are white with green or pink stripes.

The genera name from Latin, struma; 'a cushion-shaped swelling', and - aria which relates to 'possessing', a name that refers to the swollen base of the style. The species name is named after Christian Frederik Louis Leipoldt, 1880-1947, a South African author and plant collector, corresponding with Harry Bolus, farther in law of the Harriet Margaret Louisa Bolus. This is a winter-grower, flowering in late autumn.
