This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Dietrich and Ute Müller-Doblies in 1985. It is found in southern Namibia, growing in a heavy clayish soil with some water and lots of sun. The bulb can grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to eight centimetres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name from Latin, struma; 'a cushion-shaped swelling', and - aria which relates to 'possessing', a name that refers to the swollen base of the style. The species name after Robert Gathorne-Hardy, 1902-1973, a British writer, botanist, and horticulturalist. It start flowering in the late autumn, followed by the leaves in winter.
