This member of the Apocynaceae family was given this name by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1902. It is found in Botswana, Congo, Eswatini, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The bulbs will grow to five centimetres in diameter, the stems reaches for one meter.
The genera name from from Greek, stomat -, 'stoma' and - stemma; 'crown'. The species name after Mrs. Rose Monteiro, 1840, the wife of Joachim J. Monteiro, a Portuguese entomologist and naturalist; they collected plant in Angola and Mozambique It is in the subfamily Periplocoideae. Former a member of the Asclepiadaceae and the Periplocaceae family.
