This member of the Malvaceae family was given this name by Nicholas Edward Brown in 1921. It is found in Botswana, Eswatini, Mozambique, NE South Africa and Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The swollen stem can grow from 40 to 80 centimetres in diameter, the entire tree to seven metres in height. The flowers are greenish yellow with red or pink stripes.

The genera name after the Latin god; Sterculius. The species name after Archdeacon F.A. Rogers, an English missionary and plant collector.
