This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by James Bateman in 1838. It is found in Mexico, growing as an epiphyte below 1100 meters. It thrives with some to lots of water and some sun. The plant can grow to 35 centimetres and the amassing flower up to 20 centimetres across. The pseudobulbs grow to 3,5 to 4 centimetres in diameter. The genera is named after the Earl of Stanhope. The species name means 'like a tiger'.
