This member of the Lamiaceae family was given this name by John Kenneth Morton in 1962. It is found in India, Java, Malaya, Maluku, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sumatera; Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. It grows in rich but well drained soil. The plant will raise up to 60 cm, the round potato-like bulbs grow up to three centimetres in diameter. I am not sure they will appreciate to be exposed. The flowers are pale blue.
The genera name means 'pipe stamens'. The species name for the round leaves.
