This member of the Primulaceae family was given this name by Carl von Linnaeus in 1753. It is found in the Alps and Pyrenees, growing in a rich soil with lots of melting-water water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow to 2,5 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to three centimetres in height, twelve with the flowers which are purple.
The genera name Soldanella means 'little coins' in Italian, as the leaves have that shape. The species name indicates its origin from the Alps - and other European mountains.
