This member of the Cucurbitaceae family was given this name by Charles Jeffrey and Willem Jan Jacobus Oswald de Wilde in 2006. It is found in south and south-eastern Yunnan of China and northern Laos, from 1000 to 1800 metres height. It grows in a well drained soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to ten or even 25 centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to three metres in height. The flowers are yellow while the fruits are striped green.
