SINNINGIA MICANS

This member of the Gesneriaceae family was given this name by Alain P. Chautems in 1995. It was found in a small area near São Paulo in Brazil, growing in a well drained limestone soil with some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to fourteen centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are red to dark red. It is believed to be extinct in the wild; last record was in the 1940'ies. The genera is named after Wilhelm Sinning,1792–1874, a gardener of the Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The species name means 'sparkling'. The flowers by Hannon.
