SINNINGIA GIGANTIFOLIA

This member of the Gesneriaceae family was given this name by Alain P. Chautems in 1990. It is found in the Serra da Mantiqueira and higher parts of the Serra do Mar in south-eastern Brazil, growing in a rich but well drained soil with quite some water and little to some sun. The caudex can grow to eight centimetres or more in diameter, the entire plant to 150 centimetres in height. The flowers are dark red.

This plant originates from the heights (2000m), and prefer a relative low temperature. The genera is named after Wilhelm Sinning,1792–1874, a gardener of the Botanische Gärten der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. The species name is Latin for 'large leaf'.
