This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1897. It is found in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Somalia and northern Kenya, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The stem can grow to 28 centimetres in diameter and reach a height of two to six metres. The flowers are white to brownish white with a reddish throat.

The genera name means 'Sesamun bush' a member of the same family. The species name is named after Domenico Riva, 1856-1895, an Italian explorer and naturalist. Flower by Soumen Aditya.
