This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Ib Friis and Inger Nordal in 1976.
It is found in Botswana, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sudan, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, growing in well-drained soil with little or no sun. The bulbs will grow to ten centimetres, the whole plant to 60 centimetres. The flowers are scarlet, and it can be reproduced both by seeds and bulbs.
The genera name from doxus meaning 'glory' or 'splendour', and -puniceus meaning 'crimson', 'scarlet' or 'purple'. The species name means 'crimson'.
