This member of the Amaryllidaceae family was given this name by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque in 1836. It is found in most of Africa, growing in a well drained sol with some water and some sun. The bulb will grow to five centimetres in diameter, the leaves up to 70 centimetres in length. The flowers are pink.

The genera name from doxus meaning 'glory' or 'splendour', and -puniceus meaning 'crimson', 'scarlet' or 'purple'.
