This member of the Orchidaceae family was given this name by Leslie Andrew Garay and George C. Kennedy in 1976. It is found from Guatemala, Honduras and Belize up in Mexico, growing as an epiphyte in rain forests with lots of water and little to some sun. The pseudobulbs can grow to seven centimetres, the whole plant up to 30 centimetres, and the inflorescence with the yellow, maroon and white flowers up to 45 centimetres.

The genera name is named for for John Ross, 19th century plant collector in Mexico and Latin glossum; 'tongue'. The species name means 'big'. A plant from Orchids-loeada.lv.
