This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by Edmund Gilbert Baker in 1899. It is found in south and eastern Ethiopia and north-western Somalia, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire bush to 45 centimetres in height. The flowers are shades of purple and pink to mauve with a darker throat.
The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and Latin discus; 'disc'. The species name after the edge of the seeds.
