This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by John Gilbert Bake in 1906. It is found in Zambia and Zimbabwe, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to five centimetres or more, the whole plant grow to 20 centimetres height. The flowers dark purple to wine-red, sometimes with a yellow throat.
The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and Latin discus; 'disc'. The species name is named after George F. Scott-Elliot, 1862-1934, and Indian-born British botanist.
