This member of the Pedaliaceae family was given this name by Ralph Peckover in 2016. It is found in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and north-eastern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 20 centimetres in height. The flowers are red to red to orange with a yellow throat.

The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and Latin discus; 'disc'. The species name for the cinnabar-red flowers.
