This member of the Cactaceae family was given this name by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose in 1919. It if found in Argentina, growing in grit or well-drained soil with little water and some sun. The branches will reach for one to two meters, the caudex can grow to six centimetres. The flowers are yellow, and it can be reproduced by cuttings as well, which will form a caudex.

The genera name from Latin ptero; 'winged' and cactus. The species name for the swollen underground sterns.
