This member of the Portulacaceae family was described by Moritz Kurt Dinter in 1923.

It is found in Ethiopia, India, Kenya, north and central Namibia, Somalia, north-east South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and southern Zimbabwe. It will get swollen roots, up to five centimetres in diameter. The branches will get 30 cm. The flowers are yellow.

The genera name from Latin portula; 'small door' for the fruits, which open with a small lit. The species name means 'hilly; grows on hills'. An other species: Portulaca cardenasiana, D. Legrand. Bolivia. Red flowers.
