PLECTRANTHUS ECKLONII

This member of the Lamiaceae family was given this name by George Bentham in 1848. It is found in South Africa, growing in a rich and well drained soil with some water and some sun. The stem can grow to 14 centimetres in diameter, and the bush up to three metres. The flowers are bluish purple, but can be found in white to pink as well.

The genera name from the Greek plektron; 'spur' and anthos; 'flower', referring to the spurred flowers. The species name after Christian Frederick Ecklon, 1795-1868, a Danish chemist and botanical explorer. Photo by Pza.sanbi.org.
