This member of the Phytolaccaceae family was given this name by Carl von Linnaeus in 1753. It is found in mid-, south and eastern United States, growing in a well drained to rich soil with quite some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to six centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from one to three metres in height. The flowers are white.

The genera name means 'plant', and 'crimson colour' for the berries. The genera name americana is in reference to this plant being native to America. The flowers by Dieter Wagner, Plantnet.org.
