PEPEROMIA PUGNICAUDEX

This member of the Peperomiaceae family was given this name by Guillermo Pino in 2011. It is found in the central part of western Peru, around 3300 metres height. It is growing in a clayish soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to seven centimetres in diameter, the leaves to seven as well and the flowers twice the height. The flowers are whitish.

The genera name means 'pepper-like', not as to appearance but as to kinship. The species name originates from the Latin pugnus; 'fist', referring the the older caudex's shape. ') Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016 is Peperomiaceae now part of the Piperaceae.
