This member of the Peperomiaceae family was given this name by Anne Casimir Pyramus de Candolle in 1866. It is found in north-western Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, growing in pockets of rich soil among rocks with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant from two to five centimetres in height. The flowers are yellow and rather succulent.
The genera name means 'pepper-like', not as to appearance but as to kinship. The species name means "having small leaves". ')Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016 is Peperomiaceae now part of the Piperaceae. A plant with exposed caudex by Humber Alberto, Inaturalist.ca.
