This member of the Peperomiaceae family was given this name by George Bentham in 1844. It is found in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, growing in a rich soil with quite some water and little or no sun. The caudex can grow to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to nine centimetres in height. The strange flowers are white.

The genera name means 'pepper-like', not as to appearance but as to kinship. The species name from Greek; kotyledon; "cup" or "hollowed". ')Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016 is Peperomiaceae now part of the Piperaceae. The large flowers by Guido Mathieu, Peperomia.net.
