This member of the Peperomiaceae family was given this name by Karl Sigismund Kunth in 1848. It is found in Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua, growing in a rich soil with quite some water and little sun. The caudex can grow from one to two centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to eight centimetres in height. The flowers are white.
The genera name means 'pepper-like', not as to appearance but as to kinship. The species name Claytonia, a member of the Portulacaceae family, and Greek -oides; "resambling" for its resemblance.
