PEPEROMIA BASIRADICANS

This member of the Peperomiaceae* family was given this name by Guido Mathieu in 2011. It is found in central and south-western Mexico, growing in a rich soil with quite some water and little or no sun. The caudex can grow to 0,8 centimetres in diameter and 1,5 centimetres high, the entire plant from two to five centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish.

The genera name means 'pepper-like', not as to appearance but as to kinship. The species name refers to the position of the roots at the base of the tuber, which is atypical among the Mexican geophytic Peperomia species, in which the roots generally originate at the apex of the tuber. ')Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016 is Peperomiaceae now part of the Piperaceae.
