This member of the Asclepiadaceae* family was given this name by Arthur Allman Bullock in 1962. It is found in Central African Republic, Guinea and Sierra Leone, growing on pure granite or in a well drained soil with some water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to four centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 50 or even 90 centimetres in height. The flowers are blue - well; bluish.

The genera name means 'five angled thorn'. The species name caerulea referring to the blue flowers which are unique in the genus. *)Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Asclepiadaceae is now part of the Apocynaceae.
