The swollen roots can grow to four or five centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are greenish and pink.
The genera name from Greek; pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the bills of storks. The species name means 'split petals', and they sure are. The bare caudex by Vered A. Mann. P. schizopetalum var. amathymbicum by Vered A. Mann.
