PELARGONIUM LEIPOLDTII

This member of the Geraniaceae family was given this name by Reinhard Gustav Paul Knuth in 1912. It is found in the south-western South Africa, growing in sand or other well drained soil with little water and some to lots of sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the leaves reaches 20 centimetres. The flowers are white with feather-like maroon markings.

The genera name from Greek; pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the bills of storks. The species name after Dr. Christian F. L. Leipoldt, 1880-1947, among other a plant collector in South Africa. This is a winter-grower. Photo by Vered A. Mann. Photo by Vered A. Mann.
