This member of the Geraniaceae family was given this name by Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in 1806. It is found in central southern South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and some sun. The caudex can grow to three centimetres in diameter, the entire plant to six centimetres in height. The flowers are white with dark red markings.
The genera name from Greek; pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the bills of storks. The species name referring to the fissure/split leaves. More narrow leaf form by Vered A. Mann. The side of the young caudex by Vered A. Mann.
