This member of the Geraniaceae family was given this name by Carl Ludwig von Willdenow in 1800.
It is found in a small area near Leipoldtville in South Africa, growing in wintertime with little water and lots of sun. The thickened root can grow to twelve centimetres in diameter, the plant reach up to 25 centimetres. The flowers are from almost white to pale yellow with reddish markings.
The genera name from Greek; pelargos; 'stork' for the ripening fruits, which resembles the bills of storks. The species name from Latin appendiculate; 'with small projections' for the stipules.
