This member of the Apocynaceae family was given this name by Marcel Pichon in 1949. It is found in the southern Madagascar, growing in grit or other well drained soil with little to some water and lots of sun. It can grow to 75 centimetres in diameter and ten to fifteen meters height. The flowers are pale pink.

The genera name from Greek; pachys; 'thick' and Greek podion; 'small foot' for the thick caudiciform trunk, formed by some species. The species name means 'of noon, mid-day' as when the flowers opens.
