This member of the Apocynaceae family was described by Alphonse Louis Pierre Pyramus de Candolle in 1844. It is found in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, growing in a well drained soil with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to 20 centimetres or more in diameter, the branches will grow up to 120 centimetres in length. The flowers are pale pink with a darker tube.

The genera name from Greek; pachys; 'thick' and Greek podion; 'small foot' for the thick caudiciform trunk, formed by some species. The species means 'two-spined'. Rescued plant in Port Elizabeth.
