This member of the Apocynaceae was given this name by John Jacob Lavranos and S.H.J.V. Rapanarivo in 1997. It grows in western Madagascar in a well drained soil with little to some water and lots of sun. The stem can grow to fifteen centimetres in diameter, the branches will grow op to 50 centimetres long. The flowers are yellow.

The genera name from Greek; pachys; 'thick' and Greek podion; 'small foot' for the thick caudiciform trunk, formed by some species. The species means 'two coloured'.
