This member of the Bombacaceae* family was given this name by José Luis Fernández Alonso in 2003. It is only found on Cuba, growing in a well drained soil with quite some water and some to lots of sun. The stem can grow to 80 or even 180 centimetres in diameter, the tree will reach a height of twelve or even 25 metres. The flowers are large and white to cream.
The genera name from the Guyanese name for one of the trees in this genera. The species name for its occurrence in Cuba. *) Accordantly to the latest taxonomic system; APG IV 2016, Bombacaceae is now part of the Malvaceae. Habitat photo from Verticalgardenpatrickblanc.com.
