This member of the Polygonaceae family was given this name by Carl Daniel Friedrich Meisner in 1840. It is found in the southern part of Africa, growing in sand with some water and lots of sun. The caudex can grow up to three centimetres in diameter, the whole plant up to 30 centimetres in height. The flowers are white.
The genera name means 'sharp-angled'. The species name is named after Johann Franz Drège, a 19th century German-born botanical collector and horticulturist.
